Overview
This module will apply the Theory of Planned Behavior (TBP) to the outpatient ambulatory setting to facilitate health care providers in counseling and guiding their young clients who are at risk or have recently begun smoking cigarettes. The Theory of Planned Behavior is a middle range theory which is based on the concept that, the stronger the intention to perform a given behavior, the greater the likelihood that the individual will engage in that behavior (Herrmann, 2017).
The TPB is a useful model to gain understanding of decision-making with regard to behaviors. The critical beliefs underlying attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control guides the development of interventions to reduce harmful behaviors such as cigarette smoking. Our module includes an evaluation of the Theory of Planned Behavior in terms of its significance, consistency, clarity, adequacy and feasibility. We have developed a tool to provide health care workers to administer to patients to assess for their risk of using cigarettes in order to tailor early prevention interventions.

ProblemTobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable diseases including pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular diseases and lung cancer and in the United States. Thousands of youth start smoking every day. (CDC, 2017)
We hope to provide a useful tool in order to catch adolescents early in their use or before using tobacco in order to tailor prevention interventions. In this way we can help to reduce the burden of preventable disease in our country. |
Practice AreaThis module is intended to be utilized by advance practice nurses and other health care providers in the ambulatory outpatient setting. Providers in this setting screen for tobacco and drug use at each visit and are responsible for providing smoking cessation counseling when appropriate.
Providing this counseling in the most concise and effective way is essential given short appointment times and the health benefits of early smoking cessation. (Cao, 2011) |
